The Asbestos Survey Process (Process for Locating and Testing Asbestos in Buildings)

Share

An asbestos survey is legally required before demolition or renovation of pre-1990 buildings in Manitoba. Learn what the survey process involves and why documentation must be retained for 40 years.

What Is an Asbestos Survey?

An asbestos survey is a systematic process to identify, evaluate, and document the safety status of materials suspected to contain asbestos throughout a building. It is conducted by a competent person as defined by Manitoba's Workplace Safety and Health regulations. Our asbestos testing team provides full survey services.

Why Is a Survey Required?

A survey is required by Workplace Safety and Health Manitoba regulations to protect all workers and building occupants. Surveys are mandatory for buildings constructed before 1990 when applying for demolition or renovation permits. All survey documentation must be maintained on-site during active projects and retained in company records for a minimum of 40 years. Five business days advance notification to regulatory authorities is required before asbestos abatement work begins.

Steps We Take to Locate and Remove Asbestos and Achieve Compliance in Manitoba

Our survey and abatement process follows ten sequential steps:

1. Project planning and client consultation to understand scope and objectives 2. Desktop review of available building records and historical documentation 3. Visual inspection of all accessible areas by a certified competent person 4. Collection of representative bulk samples from all suspect materials 5. Laboratory analysis by an accredited facility using polarized light microscopy 6. Preparation of a comprehensive asbestos inventory report with photographs 7. Regulatory notification (minimum 5 business days before abatement) 8. Development of a detailed asbestos control plan for the project 9. Abatement by certified technicians following the approved control plan 10. Independent third-party air clearance testing and written confirmation of safe re-occupancy
