How to Collect a Sample for Asbestos Testing
Asbestos sample collection should only be performed by trained professionals with proper protective equipment. Learn the correct procedure for safe and compliant sample collection.
Important Notice
Asbestos testing and sample collection should only be performed by trained professionals equipped with proper protective equipment and certifications. Improper collection releases fibres and creates health and legal risks. This guide outlines the professional procedure for informational purposes only.
Step 1: Preparation
Required protective equipment includes: Tyvek disposable coverall, P100 half-face or full-face respirator, safety glasses, latex or nitrile gloves, and appropriate footwear covers. Required tools include: HEPA vacuum, professional core drill or utility knife, containment materials including plastic sheeting, sealed poly bags, labels, and a camera for documentation.
Step 2: Taking the Sample
The process involves planning sample locations to ensure representative coverage, preparing the work area with plastic sheeting and containment, applying moisture to the sample area to minimise airborne fibres during collection, using a core drill or utility knife to extract material, immediately sealing the sample in a labelled container, photographing the collection location, and properly disposing of contaminated materials including outer gloves and any used containment materials in sealed, double 6-mil poly bags.
Containing and Preparing the Sample
Collected samples require double-bagging in sealed poly bags. The exterior of each bag is wiped clean to remove surface dust. Each bag is labeled with the collection location, date, property address, and sample identification number. All sample locations are photographed to maintain accurate documentation for the laboratory report. For professional sample collection, contact our asbestos testing team.
